Labor & Employment
We've come a long way since the country entered the largest economic recession since the Great Depression. And while the economy has begun to show strong signs of growth, for many Americans, the effects of the recession are still greatly affecting their lives. I believe that it is important to continue to support families who are struggling with unemployment during this difficult time. In order to assist families and individuals in need, I've voted in favor of unemployment insurance extensions and will continue to vote in favor of domestic job expansion programs. I want to assure you that I will continue working in Congress to alleviate the economic hardships faced by you and so many other Americans.
I will also continue to support our federal workers. As a Blue Dog Democrat, I believe that the federal budget is on an unsustainable path and that we must focus on reducing our deficit. Various views and opinions exist about how to improve the long-term fiscal outlook, specifically centered on which programs should be prioritized or sacrificed and whether or not pay freezes should be enacted. Let me be clear, I believe that federal workers, who were not the cause of the financial crisis, have been unfairly blamed for the current economic climate. It is important that we protect federal workers and ensure that they are not continually targeted for cuts.
