Stop Financial Crimes
Washington,
June 21, 2010
Mortgage fraud, scams targeting senior citizens, contractor scams, identity theft - these are all crimes hitting Georgians. Learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones. Education is a good defense.
If you are a victim or aware of financial crimes, please report them. For more information, please visit the Federal Fraud Taskforce: http://www.stopfraud.gov/ You may also want to request a free copy of your credit report to check for irregular items. You can request a free report yearly from each of the three national credit bureaus. Only one website is the official place to request the free report: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp As a member of the House Committee on Financial Services Committee, I was able to help write the law allowing for free credit reports. Georgia State law had earlier allowed a free credit report, so I was able to grandfather the state law and prevent it from being preempted by the Federal law. So, Georgia residents are eligible for two annual credit reports: one under federal law and one under state law. Finally, you may want to visit the FTC consumer protection website: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/index.shtml |
