Scott to Honor Military Academy Nominees

Scott, Col. Deborah Grays to Make Posthumous Military Medal Presentations

Today Congressman David Scott (GA-13) announced the nomination of 21 area students to our nation’s esteemed Military Academies. Congressman Scott will honor these outstanding young people and their families during a special ceremony Saturday, February 5th at 10:00am the National Archives Center in Morrow, Georgia, (5780 Jonesboro Road, Morrow, GA 30260).

Congressman Scott will also join Colonel Deborah Grays, Garrison Commander of Forts McPherson and Gillem, to present medals for bravery and valor in combat to the families of veterans Phillip Fannin and Earl Franklin. Fannin served honorably during World War II and the Korean War; his daughter Phyllis Whitfield accepted 12 medals on his behalf, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Franklin served honorably in the Vietnam War; his wife Wilhelmina Franklin accepted 15 medals on his behalf, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

To be considered for an academy appointment, an applicant must first be nominated. U.S. Senators and Members of the U.S. House of Representatives may nominate applicants who meet the following eligibility requirements: 17 to 23 years old; U.S. citizen, and unmarried without any legal obligation to support children or other dependents.
