Congressman David Scott Urges Metro Atlanta Families: File Taxes Before May 17, Get Monthly Advance Child Tax Credit Payments as Soon as Possible

Congressman David Scott (GA-13), chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, today urged hardworking families in Georgia’s 13th Congressional District to file their taxes before the upcoming May 17th deadline to ensure they receive the new advance monthly Child Tax Credit payments they are entitled to as soon as possible.

As part of the American Rescue Plan Congressman David Scott helped pass earlier this year, families could get monthly payments of up to $300 per child beginning as soon as July. The best way to ensure eligible families receive their payments is to file a 2020 tax return – even if they don’t have earnings to report or don’t normally file – because the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) needs information from tax returns in order to calculate and issue advance monthly payments.

  • More than 180,800 children – a stunning 89.6 percent of all children in Georgia’s 13th Congressional District – could benefit from the advance monthly payments.
  • More than 54,700 households in Georgia’s 13th Congressional District could get an average total benefit of $2,900.

“Georgia’s working and middle-class families can breathe easier knowing that with advance monthly payments of the Child Tax Credit, help is here,” said Congressman David Scott. “The expanded and improved Child Tax Credit is a historic change that both cuts child poverty and is a lifeline to the middle class. These advance payments will put more money in the pockets of hardworking metro-Atlanta parents now to help offset burdensome monthly expenses for their families and help fuel our economy.”
