Dear Friend:
Last Friday night, the House agreed to consider a budget for the remainder of the 2011 fiscal year. Last minute negotiations centered around Republican efforts to eliminate Title X family planning programs. Once that obstacle was removed, a bipartisan consensus was reached to fund government services.
This deal cuts spending by $78.5 billion from the President’s original FY 2011 Budget, which is the largest annual spending cut in our history. These are real cuts that will save taxpayers money and have a real impact on the deficit. Many cuts will be painful, and are to programs that I support, but the fiscal situation is such that Congress must act in a responsible bi-partisan way.
Now that a federal shutdown has been averted for the short term, Congress must consider the long-term deficits facing our nation. This next phase of budget reform will be hard fought over the future of programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
Your voice will be important during this debate. You can register your views on some of these budget cuts in a survey on my website linked here.
