Congressman David Scott, Representing Georgia's 13th District

Dear Friend:

A lot has happened since the last newsletter.  Please take a moment to catch up on the latest news in Washington and the 13th Congressional District.

July 31
- Welcomed attendees at the Hope for Homeowners Event in Atlanta.

August 1 - Spoke to the annual convention of the American Veterinary Medical Association in Atlanta.

August 2 -  Welcomed President Obama to Dobbins AFB and to Atlanta.

August 8 - Speaking at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Cartersville.


Congressman Scott Featured in Local News


On July 29, the Clayton News-Daily featured a story on Prevention PLUS of Forest Park and the large federal grant the program received to provide job training for at-risk youth: "The local program is seen as being very effective in their work."  The full story can be found here.


On July 31, 11 Alive ran a story about Congressman Scott securing FEMA flood assistance for Cobb and Douglas Counties: "These funds could not come quickly enough," said Rep. David Scott, (D), Georgia 13th District."  To read the full story click here


On August 2, WSB-Radio ran an article about President Obama's visit to Georgia: "Greeting the president at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta Monday were Congressman John Lewis and Governor Sonny Perdue as well as Representatives David Scott and Sanford Bishop and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. " For the full article, click here.


On August 3, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution previewed the upcoming Health Fair.  For more on this article, read at this link.


On August 4, the Douglas Neighbor reported that:  "Congressman David Scott, D-Jonesboro, voted on July 27 for supplemental FEMA funding for property buyouts in the Atlanta suburbs."  click here for the full story.


On August 4, the Clayton News-Daily ran a story about local students who received scholarships through the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.  The scholarship checks were provided to the students in a ceremony in Congressman Scott's Smyrna district office.  The full article can be read at this link.


Recent votes


On July 28, the House passed H.R. 5875, the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations for Border Security.  This bill provides funding to address the threat of increased violence along the Southwest Border by strengthening border security and enforcement efforts.  The focus of this border security supplemental bill is increasing security and reducing violence along the Southwest Border.  The Senate passed the bill on August 5 and the funding should be headed to the US-Mexico border soon.  


The week of July 26, I voted for bills to appropriate funds for the Departments of Veterans Affairs, HUD and Transportation (H.R. 5822 and 5850).  These measures must now be approved by the Senate.

I also voted for H.R. 4899, the Supplemental Appropriations Act, which provides additional FEMA funding for Georgia residents as well as providing support for troops on the ground in Afghanistan.

Upcoming events


On August 12, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is hosting a  seminar in Atlanta to provide information on how to be an FDIC Investor and/or Asset Purchaser and how to establish or acquire a minority depository institution.  August 12 from 8:30 AM-5:30 PM at the Shearaton Hotel on 165 Courland Street. The City of Douglasville TV has posted a long interview with Congressman Scott about the future of HWY 92 on their YouTube page.
