Dear Friend:
Georgia ranks fourth in the nation in home foreclosures and first in bank failures. We need to approach the foreclosure crisis as a ground war that is winnable only with the appropriate coordination between homeowners and their lenders on a one-on-one basis. This past June, I hosted a foreclosure assistance event in College Park with the U.S. Treasury and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. We were able to assist over 3,000 people at the two-day event - many were helped on the spot. And in August, I joined in a bi-partisan Congressional hearing in Newnan to review community bank failures, largely caused by the housing crisis.
There is much more that needs to be done to turn around the collapse in the housing market, which has heavily affected the 13th Congressional District. Last week, I was the Congressional Black Caucus member of the week for messaging. I used my time to focus on how foreclosures are stunting the economic recovery. You can read my column on the CBC's website at this link. Please, take a few minutes to read about the latest news in the district and D.C.

New Student Loan Assistance
President Obama recently announced the new "Pay As You Earn" student loan proposal. This plan will allow about 1.6 million students the ability to cap their loan payments at 10 percent starting in 2012. The plan will also forgive the balance of their debt after 20 years of payments. Additionally, an estimated 6 million students and recent college graduates will be able to consolidate their loans and reduce their interest rates. To learn more about this program, click this link.
