Congressman David Scott, Representing Georgia's 13th District

Dear Friend:

This week, House Republicans passed a 3-week budget, took aim at NPR and voted to eliminate foreclosure assistance programs.  Unfortunately, we are still waiting for a jobs agenda to be debated or even introduced.

During the past couple of weeks I have heard from many constituents and local leaders who said that cutting foreclosure and neighborhood stabilization programs is penny wise and pound foolish.  If we cannot turn around the housing crisis, then how can we get the economy back on track?  You can be sure that my first priority is ensuring that our neighborhoods remain strong and people can hang on to their homes.

Please take a minute to read up on the latest news from Congress and the 13th Congressional District.

Recent House Votes

NPR funding - On Thursday, the House passed H.R. 1076, which would prohibit federal funding for NPR. The bill generally prohibits the use of federal funds to support NPR or to acquire or create content for local public radio stations.  Congressman Scott voted no.  The bill only prohibits funding and does not cut spending.

Three-Week Stopgap Funding (H J Res 48).  The House passed a three week funding bill. The measure extends government funding authority for three weeks, through Friday, April 8.  Another funding bill must be enacted by then to avoid a government shutdown. Congressman Scott opposed this measure and believes the budget needs to be given more serious consideration than the current partisan games.

Elimination of Redevelopment Program — The House also passed HR 861, the Neighborhood Stabilization Program Termination Act . The bill terminates the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, which provides federal grants to cities to redevelop abandoned properties in areas with high foreclosure rates. Congressman Scott voted no.

Georgia Transportation Improvement Act

The Transportation Investment Act divides the state into 12 regions for the purpose of voting on a one percent sales tax to fund transportation projects in that region. All revenues collected in each region stay in that region, with 15 percent going to local governments to fund any transportation projects they choose and 85 percent funding a list of projects voters can review before they vote. The Atlanta Regional Roundtable will create the list of projects that will be on the ballot in 2012.  To learn more about the process, click here.
