Dear Friend:
Last week was a busy week in the district. I met in my office with various constituent groups and spoke to several audiences around Atlanta including the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 732, and the Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic Advance seminar. I also served as Grand Marshall in the City of Palmetto's Spring Festival and Parade.
This week in Congress, the House considered the Defense Authorization bill, a bill to repeal grants to expand medical education, and received an address by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Please take a minute to read up on the latest news from Congress and the 13th Congressional District.
Floor Speech on the Economy
On Monday, Congressman Scott gave a speech to the US House of Representatives about the economy. In the speech, he focused on the burden of a high unemployment on Americans:
I can't tell you how desperate people become when they can't find work. I can't tell you how depressed people become when people are used to working and they wake up every morning with no place to go. Or they have to make certain decisions and some can't find food or buy the food to feed their families. That is the situation we're in with these 13 million American people. We can do better.

Legislative and Committee Action
Votes this week. House Republicans brought up a bill (H.R. 1216) to eliminate funding for grants to create more doctors in underserved areas. The Republicans introduced this legislation as part of their efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The grants would go to health centers and clinics for primary care residency programs in areas such as: family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, psychiatry, dentistry, and geriatrics. The bill passed by a vote of 234-185. Congressman Scott voted no. He believes more doctors are needed in under served fields and that this should not be a partisan issue.
