Pre-existing condition health coverage
Today, eligible residents of Georgia will be able to apply for coverage through the state’s Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan program run by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan was created by the Affordable Health Care Act to make health insurance available to those who have had a problem getting insurance due to a pre-existing condition. Recent votes
- Congressman Scott voted for H.R. 5623, the Homebuyers Assistance and Improvement Act. For those who entered into a contract to buy a home by April 30, this legislation extends until October 1 the deadline for closing in order to be eligible for the first-time homebuyer tax credit. Under current law, these homebuyers were required to close by June 30 to receive the credit. The President will likely sign this into law soon.
- Congressman Scott voted for a financial reform bill, H.R. 4173, to protect consumers from predatory lending, confusing fine print, and industry gimmicks while ensuring the end of taxpayer-funded bailouts. This legislation is in response to the meltdown of the mortgage market, which caused a recession and job losses. More information about the legislation can be found here.
- Congressman Scott voted in the House Agriculture Committee to expand agriculture trade and ease American travel with Cuba. H.R. 4645 - the Travel Restriction Reform and Export Enhancement Act could be brought up on the House floor for a vote in July.
Expired legislation - unemployment insurance and flood insurance.
The Flood Insurance Program has been extended through October 1. The Senate had previously delayed action on this programs for weeks. Congressman Scott is working on a bill to update the program and extend it through 2015.
In addition, FEMA funds are needed to buyout properties in Cobb and Douglas Counties that were damaged in the 2009 floods. Congressman Scott has voted for this bill, but the Senate has been unable to complete action on this measure.
Unemployment Insurance for the long-term unemployed has been blocked by Republicans in the Senate for the third time. There is no chance of additional action on this needed program until the Senate returns for work on July 12.
