Named after one of Georgia’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence, Gwinnett County became Georgia’s 42nd county when in 1818 the state legislature formed its boundaries from land acquired from the Creek and Cherokee Indians. The county courthouse moved several times before finally finding a permanent structure in 1884, which served as the headquarters of the county government until 1988.
As the agricultural importance of cotton began to decline, Gwinnett’s agriculture industry shifted its focus to dairy farming. After Gwinnett was linked to the railroad network around Atlanta and as Atlanta grew, Gwinnett County became one of the most important dairy-producing regions in the United States. Recreation tourism became an important part of the Gwinnett economy with the creation of Lake Lanier in 1957. Gwinnett County experienced dramatic growth in the 1980’s and 1990’s, at one point being named the fastest growing county in the United States. Today, Gwinnett County is the home of big-city shopping, thousands of employers, over 300,000 workers, and facilities for recreation, professional sports, concerts, conventions and cultural events.
