Today Congressman David Scott welcomed Dean Beresford, winner of the 13th District’s Third Annual Congressional High School Art Competition, to the opening ceremony of the 2005 Artistic Discovery exhibition on Capitol Hill, where the artist’s winning painting, Angel, will be displayed for one year. Dean’s work be displayed with other Congressional High School Art Competition winners nationwide in the Cannon Tunnel to the U.S. Capitol, a heavily traveled underground corridor connecting the House of Representatives office buildings to the U.S. Capitol Building. “I am so proud to have Dean’s work represent the very best of creative talent and drive we witness in our kids everyday in the 13th District. He clearly has a bright future ahead of him and I know that his scholarship from the Art Institute of Atlanta will continue to nurture and develop his gift,” said Congressman Scott. Dean and his father, Lenny Beresford, joined other student winners of the Congressional High School Art Competition from around the country at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the Cannon House Office Building on Capitol Hill earlier today. Winners also posed for a group photograph in front of the West front of the U.S. Capitol before heading to their sponsoring offices for individual photographs with their representatives. The Congressional Art Competition was created in 1982 as a way to showcase the artistic talents of young people throughout the country. To date, thousands of high school students from around the nation have been able to participate at the local level. The Art Institute of Atlanta presented the 13th District’s first prize winner with a $10,000 scholarship, the second prize--a $5,000 scholarship, and the third prize--a $2,000 scholarship. The Savannah College of Art and Design also offered a $3,000 scholarship renewable for up to four years for first prize. Students interested in participating in next year’s competition should contact Scott Goldstein at 770-210-5073.
