Congressman David Scott Introduces Bill to Aid Homeowners Impacted by Coronavirus Pandemic

Today, Congressman David Scott introduced H.R. 6368, legislation creating a Housing Assistance Fund to aid homeowners harmed by the global coronavirus pandemic.  The State Housing Relief Act, which would provide $35 billion in funding to states, delivers essential support for homeowners in need of mortgage payment assistance, principal reduction, or utility payment assistance.

“In the span of just a few short days, our nation has seen an unprecedented drop in economic activity as communities have taken the grim but necessary steps needed to protect the health and safety of their residents,” said Congressman Scott.  “As families and workers in Georgia are already seeing job interruptions, losses, and increased pay uncertainty, Congress must act to keep them in their homes while this crisis intensifies.”

“My bill, which authorizes funding to all 50 states and territories, will help homeowners struggling to make ends meet in the midst of this global pandemic,” continued Scott.  “In recent days, Congress has passed economic stimulus legislation to help small businesses and families weather this storm.  As we continue to craft a coordinated and comprehensive response, we must take every step in our power to protect housing security for all Americans.”

In the wake of the Great Recession, Congressman Scott was instrumental in establishing the Hardest Hit Fund, which provided targeted mortgage assistance funding for states experiencing the highest foreclosure and unemployment rates across the country.  For communities in Georgia that are still feeling the effects of the Great Recession, the State Housing Relief Act will expand upon this proven resource to provide Americans across all 50 states and territories critical assistance.
