Congressman David Scott Hails Passage of Military Readiness Legislation
Today the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 3159, the Ensuring Military Readiness through Stability and Predictability Deployment Act, which would mandate troop rest times equal to their deployment times.
“Our military men and women are overburdened and stretched nearly to the breaking point,” Congressman Scott said. “Military families deserve enough time at home to recover from combat deployments in Iraq.”
The Department of Defense released a detailed mental health survey of troops in Iraq which highlights a high level of combat stress suffered during multiple and lengthy tours of duty. The military’s report found that longer deployments increase the likelihood of psychological problems.
“If we support our soldiers’ well being, then we must support the Military Readiness legislation,” said Scott. “Our soldiers need rest from extended, repeated tours of duty.” The House-passed bill must be approved by the Senate.
